Light and Space Sound Dome

A spatial embodied interaction design project to inspire the practice of deep listening and meditation using drone music and LED light strips to provide an experience that responds to the movement of the user within the domes space.

The installation runs using Arduino and Processing to create an interactive light and sound experience inspired by the Light and Space Movement of artists such as James Turrell and Doug Wheeler

This design was exhibited at the Southern Sweden Design Days exposition in Malmö in June 2023. https://southernswedendesigndays.com/sv/southern-sweden-design-days-2023

Design Concept + How Might We’s

The inspiration for this project arose from a study trip to Copenhagen Contemporary Art Museum, where we visited the installation Aftershock by James Turrell. After further research into the Light and Space artistic movement, we decided to create an embodied Interaction Design (IxD) project inspired by this.

We began the design process in this case by formulating some How Might We questions to guidelines of enquiry:

How might we integrate the effects of light with the use of sound, to create an interactive experience with emotional depth?

How might we create a space a user can inhabit which isn’t confined to a museum, but can be created within the home, workplace or a collective space?

Light

Adhesive LED strips powered by the WS2811 chip were used, enabling each LED light to be controlled with an Arduino Nano 33 BLE board (via the Adafruit Neopixel library). A total of 600 LEDs (2 strips of 300 LEDs) were chosen to increase brightness. An external transformer was required as an additional source of current to power the full strips.
